Heritage and culture
When you get to this part of Sicily you feel as if you had just jumped into the past, such is the wealth of testimonies of the various rules Sicily was under: The Greek, the Roman, the Arab- Norman, Anjou's, the Spanish, Bourbon's rules.
If you want to relive the classical culture you won't have but to choose what to visit first: the Archaeological Park of Selinunte and Cave di Cusa Vincenzo Tusa, the theater of Segesta are just the closest, but certainly not the only sites to be seen. The Civic Museum of Castelvetrano houses a collection of testimonies of different historical periods, including the famous Efebo of Selinunte, dating back to the V-IV century B.C. You can also visit the Trinità€ di Delia Church, a noteworthy jewel dating back to the Arab- Norman rule, and sightsee the wealth of testimonies (churches, palaces, and so forth) of the Medieval period.
If you're in the Castelvetrano city centre you can't miss visiting the Selinus, a theater dating back to the end of 1800s and the beginning of 1900s, which boasts a wonderful curtain painted by Gennaro Pardo.
The area hosts several folklorisitc-religious events at different times of the year, including L'Aurora at Easter, L'Estate Selinuntina (comprising of a series of entertainment activities and shows) in July and August, the Sardine's Festival in August.
In addition to the wealth of testimonies of the past, this area also houses several admirable works of modern art, such as Gibellina, a city which has been labeled museum-city since it's a museum in itself. It houses the Cretto by Burri, by which Alberto Burri transformed the ruins of the 1968 Belice Earthquake into works of art by covering them with a white cement flow but leaving the road network unchanged. The Museo dell'Arte Contemporanea (Museum of Contemporary Art) houses works by famous contemporary Italian artists, such as Schifani, Pomodoro, Consagra, Cascella.
The CAM (Campus Archeologico Museale) is a centre which operates within the area of the necropolis Timpone Nero Manicalunga, in close proximity of the Archaeological park of Selinunte and Cave di Cusa Vincenzo Tusa. This centre was founded by Fondazione Kepha Onlus of Rome and aims at researching and promoting the archaeological culture, promoting the area and developing tourism. The centre is equipped for and operates in three strategic sectors: archaeology, training and services.
